Start with the geometry#

The Puzzle’s panels meet at precise angles, and the corners are where fakes fall apart first. On a genuine bag the seams are dead straight, the cuboid holds a crisp edge when the bag is structured, and it folds flat without the leather puckering or fighting the crease. Counterfeits use stiffer, thicker leather that will not collapse cleanly, so a copy tends to look slightly inflated and the corners bow rather than fold. Sit the bag empty on a flat surface: a real Puzzle relaxes into its shape, a fake stands at attention.

The leather and the edges#

Loewe works in supple, full-grain calf and a soft satin calf for the classic Puzzle. The leather has visible natural grain variation and a faint, real leather smell; a fake reads plasticky, smells chemical, and shows a uniform stamped grain. Check the edge paint along every panel: genuine edges are painted smoothly in a colour that matches the leather, with no cracking or gaps. Stamp, zip, and hardware#

The embossed Anagram (the four interlocking L motif) should be crisp and evenly pressed, never shallow or smudged. The zipper is the single most reliable tell: authentic Puzzles use a smooth, heavy YKK or branded pull that glides, and the leather zipper tab is stitched, not glued. Hardware feels weighty and is consistent in tone across every piece; lightweight, tinny, or already-flaking hardware is a fake. Hold the bag by the top: real construction feels substantial for its size, a copy feels hollow.

Dust bag, card, and date stamp#

Modern Loewe pieces ship with a precise drawstring dust bag in a clean Loewe green or natural cotton, crisp branding, never blurry or off-colour. There is an authenticity booklet and, on most Puzzles, a heat-stamped logo and a discreet code inside. Ask any seller for clear photos of the interior stamp, the zip pull, and the corners, plus original receipt provenance from Loewe.com or a named department store. A bag selling for a third of retail with no receipt, a fuzzy stamp, and only flattering angles is not a deal.
